Chapter Twenty-Four
The trip to the evacuation zone would only take a few minutes. Hunk wanted to close his eyes and rest his head against the back of the seat, but that wasn’t the most comfortable position on a helicopter since the entire vehicle was shaking. So instead, he took a moment to look around at his fellow soldiers. There wasn’t much to say, so they all remained quiet, lost in their own thoughts. Hunk could appreciate that.
They had done well. Out of the eighteen original members of the entire training group, eleven soldiers had survived their first mission. More than half made it out alive, which didn’t seem like something to celebrate, except that the UBCF teams’ survival rate in Raccoon City was less than one in ten. Once they reached the evacuation zone, Hunk would have to check to see how the UBCF teams in Yatovska had fared. He wanted to know if his training had done any good, but he believed it had.
Eight men had lost their lives – Campbell, Beckett, Njagi, Hollis, Ortiz, Teeäär, Carlin, and the pilot Walters – but only one or two of those had died due to their own actions. For the most part, Hunk felt that they had followed his training and done what they needed to do. Only a few of the men let their fear get the best of them, and even when they were up against a terrifying primary host, they had worked together as a team and managed to survive. Yes, Hunk thought they did very well.
And they had rescued sixty survivors. They might have been able to rescue even more. Fourteen civilians had died in the helicopter crash, but Hunk could not blame himself for those. He knew it would eat at his conscience for a little while, but the civilians had not died through any action of Hunk or the team. And once they resupplied and went back out into the city, he was sure they would be able to rescue even more, especially now that the primary hosts were both dead.
Captain Darby was standing, since there were only fourteen seats, and he held onto the ceiling to balance himself. He had proven himself worthy of the promotion. He was intelligent, decisive, and could think fast on his feet. It was clear that he was the right man to lead the squads, and Hunk felt he would do very well in the future. And Hunk was already thinking about the next group of soldiers he would train, and how he could incorporate the events here in Yatovska into their training.
Hunk nodded to himself and looked down at the woman slumped against his shoulder. Vaguely, he thought about asking her to join one of the squads. She would never agree to it, of course, and for that matter, neither would their employer Wesker. Her most valuable skills were more suited to undercover work, but having someone like Ada on the team was a fun thought.
She tilted her head up and looked at him.
“I thought you fell asleep,” he said.
“Hardly,” she said with a frown. “I’ll sleep for a week once this is all done, though.”
“We have to drop you off at the evacuation zone. They’ll want to know who you are.”
“It’s fine. My background should check out.”
“And then what? Back to work?”
“Absolutely not,” Ada scoffed. “I get a vacation this time. A real vacation.”
“You know,” Hunk said. “I’m probably due for some time off as well. Where do you want to go?”
Ada looked at him with a smirk. “Hunk, are you asking me out?”
“We’re even now,” he said. “So is that a yes?”
“Maybe we should run it by the boss. I don’t know if he would appreciate his employees fraternizing with each other.”
“I don’t think he’ll care.”
Ada smiled. “You’re probably right.”
“So where do you want t go on vacation?”
“Somewhere warm. How about Hawaii?”
Hunk nodded. “Hawaii sounds good. I lived there for a few years when I was younger, did you know that?”
“No, I didn’t,” Ada said. “To be honest, I don’t know much about you at all.”
“I don’t know very much about you either,” Hunk admitted. “You’re a very mysterious woman.”
“I try my best. Maybe we can learn more about each other, then.”
“Well,” Hunk said, “You know my real name. What’s yours?”
Ada just laughed. “Not a chance, Hunk. Not a chance.”
